About the Audit Office

Who we are

The Audit Office of New South Wales (AO), is a statutory authority, established under the Public Finance and Audit Act 1983. It conducts audits for the New South Wales Auditor-General.

The New South Wales Auditor-General:

  • helps the New South Wales Parliament hold Executive Government accountable for its use of public resources by auditing New South Wales Government agencies
  • is independent of Government and reports directly to the Parliament
  • is appointed by the New South Wales Governor for a fixed term of seven years

What we do

  • audit New South Wales Government agencies' financial reports
  • conduct special in-depth assessments of whether agencies are effective, efficient and economic
  • review whether agencies comply with a selection of legal requirements, government policies or central agency directives
  • investigate allegations of serious and substantial waste of public money

For over 180 years, the Audit Office of New South Wales has been assisting the Parliament of New South Wales hold Government accountable for its use of public resources. We do this by reporting directly to Parliament on our audits of Government financial reports and performance.
