The Audit Office of New South Wales
Performance and Development
Our Performance and Development system is designed to support individual development and AO objectives. Key elements include:
- development focus
- clear expectations through annual performance and development plans
- frequent, task/project focused feedback
- overall progress reviews twice a year
- accountability for managers through their own performance assessment.
The system is based around an ongoing dialogue between employees and their manager to ensure common understanding of expectations and alignment with corporate objectives.
Work-life balance
We're proud of the professional way we work together and support one another, both in the office and out in the field. We are friendly and open, and we regularly get together socially.
The Office delivers attractive work-life balance initiatives such as flexible working hours, job-sharing and career breaks to help you juggle the demands of a busy life with a successful career.

Your details will be submitted and then subsequently short listed by Clare Nash at Hays Accountancy & Finance, who will contact you to inform you how your application is being progressed.
Initial Interviews
If you are successful, your first interview will be with Clare Nash, of Hays Accountancy & Finance. This will form part of the formal interview process, and the questions asked will be around behavioural performance, and the selection criteria in the person description.
You will be asked to complete the selection criteria, but only after the initial interview, and before the interview with the AO. You will receive guidelines on this.
Interviews with the Audit Office
If you are short-listed from the initial interviews, you will be recommended for interview with the AO Selection Committee
Selection Committees in the Audit Office are generally comprised of three members. The Convenor will generally be the technical expert, typically the immediate supervisor of the advertised position. Other panel members will bring a technical, business/client or human resources perspective.
The questions asked in the interview will be based on the selection criteria in the advertisement and the position description. Similarly, if there is a case study, it will be focused to the selection criteria and the position description. Before attending the interview, ensure you are familiar with your application and the position description.
You will have an opportunity at the end of the interview to add any information in support of your application. This is your opportunity to inform the selection committee of any recent changes, such as the completion of a relevant course, or to emphasise any skills or knowledge you have that is related to the position and did not arise in your responses to the general questions.
If you have any particular needs, such as wheelchair access, please advise the Inquiry Officer of any particular needs so that arrangements may be made.
After the Interview
Once the interviews have been conducted, the selection committee will recommend a candidate for the position. When approved, the successful applicant will receive a verbal offer of employment, followed by a letter of offer. The successful applicant is required to make a verbal acceptance to Clare Nash, and then sign and return the offer acceptance to the Audit Office within a specified time.
Applicants who were unsuccessful through the shortlisting and/or interview stages will receive notification from Hays Accountancy & Finance.
