Since the beginning of 2004 the London market has seen increasing activity and there has been further growth in a number of other international jurisdictions (such as the Middle East), so it's a great time to think about moving overseas. Firms are again looking to recruit from the Australian and New Zealand markets which have traditionally produced lawyers with the quality of experience and the kind of work ethic which transplant well into the international legal marketplace. Here's what you'll need to know to set the wheels in motion...
From Home...
If you want to find a job in your preferred location before you leave home, ideally you should contact us in Australia or New Zealand a few months before you are looking to move. Our consultants are experts on the international market, and will guide you through the whole process advising on your CV, roles available in each location and the interview process.
We can give you advice on visas and restrictions, organise video conference interviews and make sure this potentially complex process runs as smoothly as possible.
Once you've arrived...
If you don't get a job whilst you are still in Australia or New Zealand or simply want to have the freedom to travel for as long as you can afford prior to arrival in your ultimate location, you may want to find a position when you arrive, although you should be aware that this mostly happens in the London market, rather than other international locations. As it tends to be only the largest UK firms and a handful of firms in London who are happy to interview lawyers by video conference and pay relocation expenses, being there on the ground will considerably increase your access to a wider range of firms who are happy to interview face to face.
You should still contact us prior to your arrival, with the aim of getting some interviews set up for as soon as you arrive where possible and dealing with logistics like references. As the process can take a while, we can also talk to you about contract and temporary positions to tide you over while finding a permanent role.
